Everything you need to know about the Cancun Carnival

The Cancun carnival is one of the most anticipated in the region and receives nearly 100,000 people in its events and activities, and in 2020 it went from being the sole venue in Playa Langosta, to having three venues: the Malecón Tajamar, the Parque from Las Palapas and Avenida Tulum.

The carnival tradition came to Mexico from Europe from the 16th century and in the Cancun carnival it takes up various elements of pre-Hispanic celebrations such as ritual dances related to ancient deities.

Within the framework of the carnival you can experience different events and activities, in addition to enjoying the magical beaches of the region or visiting the iconic archaeological zones, among many others.

Parade of allegorical cars

Made up of dozens of floats, many of them making allusions to the Mayan culture, and in which the various troupes of the numerous dance academies in the region also participate, wearing colorful costumes and to the rhythm of the batucadas infecting an atmosphere of joy and unmatched party. The parade takes place on Tulum Avenue, and lasts for several days, so you can give yourself the opportunity to experience it at least once.

Contests and Shows of comparsas

In addition to their participation during the parade, the troupes perform various shows throughout the carnival, such as competitions of different categories in which the various academies and groups in the region are dedicated to showcasing their talent in colorful numbers on the carnival stages and they will leave you ecstatic with their energy and work.

Coronation of kings and queens

The crowning contest of kings and queens is one of the great events of the carnival where the numerous contestants show their talent in front of the juries. The Cancun carnival is inclusive in these contests so there are categories for people with disabilities and categories for sexual diversity. Around one million pesos were distributed among all the categories in 2020. Without a doubt, an event that you will want to observe.

Gastronomy and crafts

Through the Magic Hands program, currently around 300 artisans participate with a wide variety of products that highlight the cultural wealth of the region in various areas and materials such as dishes and gastronomic products of the region, wood, textile, jewelry and embroidery, among many others. .

The festival has also served to promote this type of activity, positioning many of these artisans in large hotel chains, so you will easily find their products around the area and, obviously, in the carnival areas. Undoubtedly some of the main events of the carnival are the concerts in which renowned artists from Mexico and the world are invited to participate with their shows within the framework of the carnival.

In 2020 the concerts began to take place in the Malecon Tajamar area, which was rescued and rehabilitated as a local initiative for this purpose.
